I had a great deal of trouble developing a technique to catch
the black sky and the sparkling starsas I had to paint most of
it from memory.
(I still have not learned to paint in the dark!) . It took about
six months to get it right, on rainy days in the studio.

It is impossible to paint in weather like this so I sketch and memorise
as much as I can. I did the painting in the studio on a rainy day which
helped a little. A frightening time to be at sea unless you are in
something as big as the ore carrier (left centre), heading to Port
Talbot.

This painting was done in the evening whilst watching three men fishing
off the rocks near Pennard.
I didn't see them catch anything but they seemed to be enjoying
themselves, none the less.

Langland is the beach that many people associate most strongly with
the Gower. It is a place of childhood memories, of days spent
paddling and poking around in rock pools. Eating sandy sandwiches
and ice cream. It is a place where mothers and children play at
the edge of the sea or drink tea and lemonade in the rows of
old green beach huts just above the promenade.
This watercolour by RN Banning captures the spirit of those
summer days on Langland.
The Mumbles Mile
The road from Mumbles Pier to the centre of the village, contains
numerous pubs. It has long been a tradition for students and aspiring
alcoholics, to attempt to drink a pint in every pub. This is why there are
so many drunks in the White Rose and the Pilot, which are the first and
last watering places to be visited, depending on which direction you are
travelling. I have removed all the other buildings and only painted the

Done in pastel on a calm day on the incoming tide. Pastel suitedthe mood
at the time as the light was soft and the sea was calm. Often, after
stormy weather there is no sand to see, just jagged rocks.

out with my oils early in the morning, just as the sun was beginning to
warm the sand.

The sun setting in the west has given the artist R N Banning countless
opportunities to paint Mumbles head in dramatic lighting situations. This
watercolour captures the sunset over Swansea Bay, Mumbles Lighthouse
picked out against the sky and the sun glinting off the front of the
lifeboat station. Mumbles is a pretty fishing village and the well-known
gateway to the Gower.

This is Mumbles at its best. Early morning light sparkles off the buildings
and reflects the headland in the wet foreshore. "This particular morning,
it had been raining before I arrived, making everything feel fresh and
clean."

This painting of Mumbles Lighthouse, was executed in a mixture of
watercolour and almost impasto gouache. The composition was laid in
during the afternoon but by the time it was dark enough for the light
effect on the clouds to be visible, it was too dark to paint. So I made
colour notes and stared at the sea for a long time before finishing the
painting process in the studio.

Silver grey light at six o'clock on a September morning reflects off the
iron stained limestone of Mumbles Head. The yachts and other boats
have almost all been taken out of the water for the winter, avoiding the
seasonal easterly gales which every year wash some forgotten craft up
against the sea wall and pound away at it until it sinks. I like to think
that some of that threat is caught here. Painted on canvas with oils and
palette knives.

A calm, soft morning with magnificent colours in the Autumn sky. This
